If youre still working hard on those essays deep into December, chances are youve run into some combination of writers block, procrastination, and just plain old thinking you have a lot more time than you really do. Whatever your reasoning, here are five tips for avoiding college essay writers block this December. (10th and 11th graders, dont close the page just yet! Below, weve included suggestions on how to avoid the college essay hustle-and-bustle when its your turn.) 1. To avoid college essay writers block, list out the things youre proud of Do you feel anxious just looking at the college essay prompts? Is it hard to decide on a topic to write about? If so, step away from the prompts. Remember: your college essays are all about helping admissions officers learn more about you and what makes you talented, likable, interesting, and capable of contributing to and learning from your dream school. So before you get stuck answering a specific question, think about what you want them to know about you first. Without looking at the essay topics, make a list of things that youre proud of and that you want schools to know about you. So we start, then delete, then start again, then delete again, and in doing so, struggle to get momentum behind our ideas. But how often do you have that problem when youre talking with your friends? Conversation generally flows without a need for perfection: you speak in phrases that arent always complete sentences, you take tangents that dont relate back to your thesis statement, you say um or like for a quick opportunity to find the word youre looking for and then you get right back to talking, as opposed to feeling the need to delete and start over. A great way to overcome writers block is to move your first draft or your brainstorm away from keyboard and screen or pencil and paper and bring it to a conversation. Tell a friend, a parent, or even an essay editing tutor the story youre thinking about telling in your essay, and the details and organization will start to flow. Dont let perfect be the enemy of good enough when it comes to your college essays Heres a secret about college admissions: everyone else applying to your target schools is imperfect and nervous too. No matter how impressive their transcripts and extracurriculars are, when your counterparts sit down to write their essays, theyre stressed about saying the right things, nervous about choosing the right stories, and worried about fitting within the word count. The admissions office at your dream school is going to read thousands of essays this year, and none of them are going to be perfect but lots are going to get their authors admitted. Dont worry about a perfect essay: write something thats good enough and then enlist your friends, parents, and thesaurus to help you make it a little bit better before you submit it. The short answer to this question was: While most states prohibit homeschooling parents from tutoring anybody except their own children, Georgia has no such restriction. Remember? Today, I am continuing this topic I was surprised and happy to learn that the booming of homeschooling is not only a phenomenon observed at home in the US but also a worldwide trend. For example, in 2014 the United Arabic Emirates (UAE) reported 4,000 students were officially home-schooled a number that is likely much higher, for it only includes students who are above age 15. 4 Reasons For The Tutoring and Homeschooling Boom In The UAE The number one reason of the rise of tutoring is simply the fact that there exist little legislative restrictions on homeschooling. Parents in the UAE are free to tutor their children. Interestingly, this micro trend in freedom of education reflects the larger trend in increased personal and economic freedom available to citizens of the UAE. The libertarian Canadian think thank Fraser Institute anally publishes a ranking of counties. In 2014, the UAE ranked 5th of the countries in the world in terms of economic freedom; a ranking higher than most Western countries (The US ranks 16, the UK 11th, Germany 29th). The second reason for the tutoring boom is the rising costs of schooling in the UAE. Traditionally, women stay at home for child-rearing and house-holding. Now that household technology has eased these tasks women do find the time to home-school their own kids and often that of their neighbors as well. The GCSE and A-Level tests are fast approaching! Indeed, they are just over the horizon, and coming closer with each passing day. It`s revision season - all the knowledge amassed over the last 2 years must be revivified, and made immediately accessible to the mind. Pupils need to have everything they have learnt ready and at their fingertips; two years of learning distilled into a two hour exam. But what are the best ways to ensure you make the best use of the study time left? Should you cram nonstop, reading textbooks during every waking moment? Should you obtain audio files for your subjects, and listen to them while you are asleep? probably not, but here are a few things you can try to get the most out of your revision schedule: 1. Be clear what you specifically need to revise for This is vitally important - you don`t want to waste precious time studying up on topics that have no chance of being in the test. Try to obtain a copy of your subject syllabus, and consult any exercise books from the past year. The syllabus will clearly specify which topics you will be examined on, and your exercise books will show you how your teacher set out to teach parts of the syllabus. 2. Construct a revision timetable If you don`t organise your time you may fall into the trap of spending the most of your revision schedule on the subjects you enjoy the most, which will probably mean you waste precious days and weeks on parts of the syllabus you already have a good understanding of. First of all work out which parts of each subject you need to do the most work on, and make sure you apportion the majority of your time to these areas. Work out how many hours each week you can give to your revision - if you are allocated study time at school make sure you include this in your plan, along with time after school and at weekends. It may seem that the next few months of your life will be nothing but revision, but the next section will assuage that fear! 3. Ensure you take regular breaks No one is able to read and study non stop for hours on end - even the most studious individual will reach a point where their brain will be unable to assimilate any more information, unless they are permitted to take a well earned break. The danger is though that once `recess` times are permitted, the student will take them whenever the going gets though. Struggling to understand a particular part of calculus… time to take a break! getting tired of all these irregular french verbs… time to take another break! Without a good structural plan to the revision timetable the student may well reflexively take a break just at the very point where they are struggling with something difficult. For this reason break times should be written into the revision schedule, with a 15 minute interim every two hours or so. 4. Seek out videos online to help These days there is such an abundance of online video educational content, be it from students themselves helping share their knowledge in an approachable way, to world famous lecturers from prestigious schools and universities all around the world. Many students can be mentally fatigued by studying the endless pages of their textbooks - videos can make learning come alive, and the right online teacher may engage the student, and help them understand concepts they previously couldn`t come to grips with. 5. Obtain past papers A student may have a thorough and in depth knowledge of their subject, but unless they are able to apply and express their comprehension under exam conditions their true capabilities will not be reflected in their grade. For this reason students should actually practice taking exams, in order that, when the day comes, they are not intimidated and anxious, and can perform to the best of their abilities. Past papers can be easily obtained from the respective subject`s syllabus - the student should sit some of these exams under the same strict conditions they will have to adhere to when they take the real exam. You Said What Or, the Joys of Learning the Local Language Once upon a time, I was a language teacher in Japan.   I studied hard and got my Japanese to a level that allowed me to hike, ski, surf and sushi taste my way across Japan.   I had the time of my life and wouldn’t trade it for anything else in my life.   But it was not always that way.   When I first touched down as a fresh-faced youngster, I had the benefit of being placed in a great school with ample holidays and I told myself I would make the most of them.   So every chance I got, I jumped on the train and explored the country with my new teacher friends; it was a breeze with them leading the way.   But as my new friends started to move back home, I had to rely on my broken Japanese to get me around the country.   I was content to just point and mime my way through most situations, but this severely limited the amount of things I could do.   I was stuck in a rut and contemplating going home until I had an epiphany brought on by two life-changing moments: one embarrassing and one terrifying.My embarrassing epiphany moment happened at a school function.   Hundreds of children piled on to five replica London double-decker buses and drove around Tokyo with us playing games and singing songs in English.   It was a great day and afterwards my head teacher took me around to meet some of the students’ parents.   One proud father shook my hand and asked me in Japanese, “Ureshikatta?” which means “Did you enjoy the day?”   I thought I’d take a crack at answering in Japanese, but instead of saying “Sou, Ureshii,” which means, “I did enjoy it?” I jumbled up my phonics and blurted out “Urusai,” or, “Shut up.”Egg, meet my face.However, that was nothing compared to my first health scare.   After suffering through terrible pains in my side, my friend kindly took me to the hospital.   After the doctor examined me, he had a chat with my friend.   Now, because Japanese uses lots of English loan words (gum = gamu, soccer = sakka) I thought I’d be able to follow the conversation.   To my horror, I kept hearing them say “kensa, kensa” â€" or in my mind, “cancer, cancer.” You can imagine what horrible ideas were floating through my head. As we left the office, me white as a ghost, I grabbed my friend and asked what all that cancer business was about. “What are you talking about?” she said.  â€œYou kept saying cancer, am I okay? What’s wrong with me?” I asked.  â€œOh, kensa: that means blood test!” My sigh of relief and subsequent collapse onto a couch in the waiting room was so loud it brought some nurses into the hall and I had to relive my horror and embarrassment as I composed myself.After that, I put my shoulder to the grindstone, studied Japanese every chance I got and was rewarded ten times over.   I learned that being able to communicate in the local language not only saved me from embarrassing situations or frightening misunderstandings, but it opened my eyes to a whole new side of Japan.   Now inst ead of heading to Tokyo every weekend to hang out with other expatriates, I started exploring smaller towns and more rural areas where, with my newfound language skills, I gained a new perspective on Japanese culture.   Instead of eating at restaurants where you buy tickets from a machine and eat in silence, I started to frequent local mom-and-pop places and made a lot of new friends.   Instead of only hanging out with fellow teachers, I was able to make more Japanese friends, see what Japanese family life is like, and gain a better perspective on everything Japanese.   See a pattern yet?When people talk about the benefits of travel, the number one reason stated is usually “broadening horizons.”   Well, walking through a foreign city and seeing a culture’s monuments is all good fun, but I’ve found that these types of activities only let us see a culture on the surface.   But by learning the local language, we can open up an almost infinite amount of doors that lead to greate r understanding of a culture, and, in turn, a more enjoyable and rewarding time abroad. As teachers living overseas, we are afforded an opportunity most travellers aren’t.   Don’t make the same mistake I did â€" take the time to learn the local language from the beginning.By  Nicholas Crowe

Cauliflower Poppers So I am kind of a cauliflower addict, known for using this versatile veggie in every form from pizza and even in breakfast dishes (that’s a recipe for another article). But these cauliflower poppers are about as simple as it gets in terms of preparation, and they are a delicious and guilt free snack (they contain literally zero weight-watcher points) that you can easily have on hand if prepared ahead of time.
